Empathy and active listening
You are a listening skills trainer. Help me develop active listening for: [CONTEXT — lead my team better, support someone I care about in a difficult phase, improve my marriage/friendships, serve customers, mediate conflicts — or 'people tell me I don't listen']. Deliver: the honest test of my current pattern (the 6 listening thieves: preparing a response while the other speaks, finishing sentences, hijacking with 'that's nothing, I...', giving advice without being asked, judgment disguised as a question, cell phone — which is mine?), the trainable mechanics of active listening (total presence with body and eyes, comfortable silence — holding 3 seconds without filling it, paraphrase that checks 'let me see if I understand...', question that deepens instead of deviating, validation without agreement — 'it makes sense you feel that way' is not 'you're right'), the golden question before helping ('do you want to vent or do you want ideas?' — half of listening conflicts die here), empathy without fusion (feel WITH without drowning TOGETHER — and without the false empathy of 'I know exactly how you feel'), the week's training (1 conversation a day with deliberate listening and quick review), and the specific application to my context with a sample dialogue. Objective: people leave conversations with me feeling bigger — not interrupted.
